Delhi: Kane Williamson and Chris Woakes will play for Durban Super Giants (DSG) in SA20 2025. Both these players have been included as direct signings by last season's runners-up. Earlier in June, Williamson opted out of New Zealand Cricket's central contract and also stepped down as captain of the Black Caps team in ODIs and T20 Internationals. The former Kiwi captain also expressed his desire to participate in the T20 league on South African soil.
“There will be a lot of great competitions at that time, but the SA20 looks really exciting,” Williamson had earlier told reporters.
Williamson said, “Unfortunately, this meant turning down the central contract. However, my priority is still to play for New Zealand of course. I think I will probably miss a few matches in the three-week period.”
The official social media account of the Super Giants also welcomed Williamson, writing, “Yes, Durban! He's here.”
In 254 T20 matches, Williamson has scored 6442 runs at an average of 31.57 and a strike rate of 122.58, which includes one century and 45 half-centuries.
As far as Woakes is concerned, he has been an important member of the England men's team in limited overs cricket. He played an important role in helping England win the 2019 World Cup on home ground. Woakes was a member of the 2022 T20 World Cup-winning team, but did not get a chance to play in 2024.
Earlier, Paarl Royals picked former England captain Joe Root while MI Cape Town gave a lucrative contract to Ben Stokes.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape have won both SA20 titles so far
It is worth noting that SA20 2024 is to be held from 9 January to 8 February. Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the defending champions after defeating Super Giants last season. The team captained by Aiden Markram also won the first edition of the tournament.
