A major shake-up could be on the cards ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 auctionwith Mumbai Indians (MI) reportedly nearing a blockbuster trade involving captain Hardik Pandya and Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer Arshdeep Singh.
Hardik’s potential departure would mark another significant change for MI. The all-rounder returned to the franchise from Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of IPL 2024 auction after leading GT to the title in 2022 and guiding them to the final in 2023.
His return generated enormous interest, particularly after he replaced Rohit Sharma as MI captain. However, his leadership tenure has faced considerable scrutiny, with the franchise struggling to maintain the consistency expected of a five-time IPL champion.
Mumbai’s reported willingness to explore a trade could indicate a desire to reshape the squad before the 2027 season. Hardik remains a valuable T20 all-rounder because of his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, but squad balance and leadership plans could influence the franchise’s decision.
Punjab, meanwhile, appear interested in adding an experienced Indian all-rounder who can strengthen multiple departments.
Arshdeep’s potential arrival would address an important requirement for Mumbai Indians: a left-arm fast bowler capable of operating with the new ball and delivering at the death.
The India international has established himself as a reliable limited-overs bowler through his ability to swing the ball, execute yorkers and handle pressure in the closing overs. His left-arm angle would also offer Mumbai a different option alongside their existing pace resources.
Arshdeep has previously been a key part of PBKS’s bowling plans. The franchise used its Right to Match card to retain him for ₹18 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction after another team raised the bidding price. His reported availability in the proposed trade therefore represents a significant development.
If the move goes through, Mumbai could gain a frontline Indian pacer who offers both tactical flexibility and valuable experience.
For Punjab Kings, Hardik’s all-round ability could make the difference. The franchise has been looking to build a balanced squad capable of competing consistently for the IPL title, and an experienced Indian pace-bowling all-rounder would add considerable depth.
Hardik can contribute in the middle order, accelerate the scoring rate and provide overs with the ball. His leadership experience could also prove useful under head coach Ricky Ponting as Punjab continue developing their team structure.
However, his fitness and availability will remain important considerations. Punjab would need to ensure that the proposed investment delivers the expected value across a demanding IPL campaign.
The possible departure of Arshdeep would leave a significant gap in Punjab’s pace attack, making squad planning crucial if the exchange is completed.
The reported trade is not limited to Hardik and Arshdeep. Wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod is also expected to move to Mumbai Indians as part of the proposed exchange.
Vinod could provide Mumbai with another wicketkeeping option and additional depth in the batting department. For Punjab, the deal would prioritise securing an established all-rounder, although losing Arshdeep would require further attention to the bowling combination.
