Riyan Parag was on the field, and Gautam Gambhir was in the dugout. The first India vs Sri Lanka T20I in Pallekele promised an emotive, Insta-worthy spectacle. The player-coach duo did not disappoint, as their animated expressions and reactions during this match, which marked a new era in Indian T20 cricket, captivated fans.

Suryakumar Yadav, India’s new T20I captain, deserves credit for a strategic decision. With Sri Lanka needing 56 runs off the final 24 balls, Yadav opted to hand the ball to Riyan Parag rather than using the remaining overs from India’s premier pacers, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.

In his fourth appearance for India, Riyan Parag bowled a masterful spell to close out the match against Sri Lanka. Despite this being only his second over in international cricket – having previously bowled one over for five runs against Zimbabwe – Parag performed like a seasoned pro, taking three crucial wickets in just eight balls.

Parag delivered a stellar performance, conceding just five runs and, more importantly, claiming the crucial wicket of Kamindu Mendis. Slowing down the pace, Parag induced the ball to grip and turn, beating the left-hander’s bat and hitting the stumps. Overjoyed, the youngster celebrated his maiden T20I wicket with an exuberant roar. His achievement was shared by coach Gautam Gambhir, who was equally ecstatic.

Throughout the match, Gambhir maintained a stoic demeanour. However, he suddenly became animated, clenching his fists and letting out a scream. Was this his decision to use Riyan Parag in the closing overs? and ahead of accomplished all-rounders Shivam Dube and Washinton Sundar?

Parag is a skilled bowler, having claimed 50 first-class wickets in 29 matches and 94 more in T20s and List A cricket. This class was on display against Sri Lanka, where he returned with impressive figures while troubling their lower-middle order.

After dismissing Sri Lanka for 170 in 19.2 overs, India celebrated their 43-run victory, which gave them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Sri Lanka’s strong start at 140/1 unravelled as they lost their final 9 wickets in a mere 32 balls. The second match of the series is scheduled for Sunday at the same location.
