Ricky Ponting, who coached Prithvi Shaw for three IPL seasons with Delhi Capitals, believes the young Indian batter has failed to live up to his immense potential. Despite Shaw’s talent, which should secure him a regular spot in any team’s playing XI, Ponting has grown disillusioned with the 24-year-old’s inconsistent form, injury struggles, and disciplinary problems. As a result, Ponting has essentially given up on Shaw.
Shaw is currently playing for Northamptonshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup, but has managed only 9 and 40 runs in two matches so far. Ricky Ponting, who recently parted ways with the Delhi Capitals after seven seasons as their coach, has never shied away from addressing Shaw’s struggles head-on, bluntly calling out the once-promising batter. Despite working closely with Shaw and investing significant time and effort, the former Australian captain appears to have exhausted his chances to help the young player regain his form.
“While I generally avoid discussing individual players, Prithvi Shaw should not be considered an exception. He should be a regular fixture in most teams, often being one of the first picks due to his exceptional skills. In his youth, he already had the golden chance to represent India, making a century on his Test debut,” stated Ponting to Cricbuzz.
“Midway through the year, we were unable to squeeze him the playing 11, which as a coach is disappointing, as I failed to bring out his full potential. However, there are limitations to how much one can invest in a player, and how many chances one can provide,” he added.
“If you feel your players are underperforming and not meeting the team’s needs, you may need to consider replacing them with more capable players. This ultimately falls back on the individual player. In this particular case, I’ve had numerous discussions with him in an effort to help him improve as a cricketer,” he further continued.
“Despite his youth, he is a highly talented cricketer. With the right focus and dedication, he has the potential to reach the pinnacle of his sport. Hopefully, he will soon realize what he needs to do to become the best version of himself,” he remarked.
