Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is often known for mankading batsmen at the non-striker's end. He has often done this on many occasions but on Sunday, 28 July, he got a taste of his own medicine when he was playing in the 28th match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024 at the NPR College Ground in Dindigul.
Actually, what happened was that when Ashwin was batting during the match, he stepped out of the crease at the non-striker's end before the bowler bowled the ball, due to which the bowler gave him a warning before Mankading him. This incident happened during the first innings of the match when left-arm spinner Mohan Prasad came to bowl the 15th over of the innings.
In this over, he stopped for a while before bowling the ball. He did this because he saw that Ashwin was leaving the crease before bowling the ball. Seeing the bowler stop, Ashwin immediately stopped his action. Replays showed that the all-rounder's bat was on the crease and if the bowler had removed the bails, he would have been declared out.
Let us tell you that Ashwin is known in the cricket world for running out the non-striker.
He dismissed Jos Buttler in a similar fashion during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. Earlier, Ashwin also dismissed Sri Lanka's Lahiru Thirimanne for going too far away from the crease during an ODI match in 2012. However, Virender Sehwag, who was captaining India in that match, withdrew the appeal. The MCC also removed this method of dismissal in 2022 and changed it from Rule 41 (unfair play) to Rule 38 (run out). Since then, batsmen take care not to leave the crease early when the bowler is in his rhythm.
