India clinched the T20I series against Sri Lanka 3-0 after winning the final match. Chasing a modest target of 138, Sri Lanka were cruising at 110-1 in the 16th over. However, their sudden collapse ended the thrilling match in a tie, forcing a Super Over.

The pitch favored the spinners, and Suryakumar Yadav exploited this to great effect in the final overs. He gave the ball to Rinku Singh, who bowled a brilliant 19th over, conceding just 3 runs while picking up 2 wickets.

Surya then took the responsibility of bowling the final over, with Sri Lanka needing 6 to win.

A dot ball on the first delivery was followed by the dismissals of Kamindu Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana. Asitha Fernando scored a single on the fourth ball, but Dunith Wellalage could only manage two doubles off the last two deliveries, tying the match and pushing it into the Super Over.

While Suryakumar has been praised for his smart thinking, his bizarre decision during the final over of the match nearly cost India the game. With the match on the line, Wickramasinghe hit a shot towards long-off and attempted to steal two runs. The throw was directed at the non-striker’s end, where Asitha Fernando was well short of his crease.

However, the Indian skipper unknowingly chose to throw the ball to the keeper, where Wickramasinghe had crossed the crease. A run-out there would have saved a crucial run, and Sri Lanka would have needed a boundary to win, which would have been a difficult task. Instead, the extra run became crucial as it meant that even a double was enough to send the game into a Super Over.

In the Super Over, Sri Lanka failed to deliver, managing only two runs.

India then easily chased the target on the first delivery.
