In Paris Olympics 2024, many players are winning medals and making records with their amazing performances, while there are some players who may not be getting the joy of victory but they are attracting attention with their strong game. There are also some who are competing despite difficult circumstances. Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez is also one such athlete, who is in the news at the moment. Nada recently had to face defeat in the pre-quarterfinals of the saber event. She may not have been able to register a win, but everyone is praising her because she came to show her strength in the Olympics despite being 7 months pregnant.
Everyone is praising Nada's courage and why not? Despite such difficult circumstances, participating in the world's biggest event like the Olympics, representing your country and winning some matches is no less than a medal. Now the passion of players to participate in the Olympics and win a medal is such that they are ready to play even in such circumstances and Nada is not the first player to do so, rather many players participated in the Olympics during pregnancy and 4 of them have even won medals.
Dutch equestrian legend Anky van Grunsven is one of the greatest equestrians of all time. She is the only equestrian to have won gold medals in three consecutive Olympic Games. She won gold in individual dressage at the 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics. The gold she won in Athens was the most special for her because she was five months pregnant at the time of the games. Her first child was born in November, four months after the Olympic gold.
Germany's legendary archer Cornelia Fol has also shown her prowess in the Olympics and participated in four consecutive Olympics. During this time, she won silver in the team event in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and bronze in the team event in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. During the Sydney Olympics, she was pregnant for the first time and still won a medal. The interesting thing is that she was pregnant even during her last Olympics in 2004.
Two-time Olympic diving medalist Juno Stover of America also participated in the Olympics amid pregnancy difficulties and returned with a medal. Stover did all this several decades ago, in fact she was also the first athlete to win an Olympic medal while being pregnant. She won the bronze medal in the platform event of diving during the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. During this time she was 3 and a half months pregnant. She then won the silver medal in the same event in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
Not only in the Summer Olympics, but some athletes also participated in the Winter Olympics despite being pregnant. Germany's skeleton racer Kerstin Shymkovic even won a medal. She won a silver medal in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Kerstin was 2 months pregnant at that time.
