The 5th day of the Paris Olympics is over. Indian athletes participated in different events of sports like badminton, shooting, boxing, horse riding, archery and table tennis on the fifth day. After losing some medals on the fourth day, the 5th day of the Paris Olympics was quite morale-boosting. Many players entered the pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinals, while the performance in some events was not as expected. Medal hopes have been raised in many events including PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and Lovlina. Let us know in detail how this day went for India?
The fifth day started with PV Sindhu's match. She started the day for India with a win. Sindhu won a one-sided victory in the women's badminton singles. She defeated Estonian shuttler Kuba 21-5, 21-10. With this spectacular victory, PV Sindhu has taken one more step towards the medal in the Paris Olympics. She has now reached the pre-quarterfinals.
After Sindhu, Lakshya Sen also performed well. He won against Indonesia's Jonathan Christie and made it to the pre-quarterfinals. This was a very tough match for Lakshya. Jonathan Christie was a big threat to Lakshya Sen. His record against Christie was very poor. However, he did not let it dominate him and won the match 21-18, 21-12.
In the women's boxing 75 Kg category, Lovlina Borgohain has raised hopes of a medal in Paris after the Tokyo Olympics. She has qualified for the quarter-finals by winning the round 16 match. Now as soon as she wins the next bout, a medal will be confirmed in her name. In the round 16 match, she defeated Norway's Sunniva Hofstad 5-0. Lovlina Borgohain's quarter-final match will be held on August 4 at 3.02 pm. During this, she will face Chinese boxer Li Qian.
India has already won two medals in the Paris Olympics. After Swapnil Kusale's spectacular performance on the fifth day, there is hope of another medal. Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale entered the final of the 50 meter rifle three positions of the Olympics. He has become the first Indian to reach the final of this event. Swapnil finished 7th in the qualification. The top 8 shooters have got a place in the final. In the same event, India's Aishwarya Tomar finished 9th and missed out on reaching the final. The final will be held on August 1 at 1.30 pm.
On one hand there was good news in the women's table tennis singles, on the other hand there was a heartbreaking result. The biggest good news was that Sreeja Akula won the 5th game in the round of 32 and qualified for the pre-quarterfinals. She became the second Indian to do so after Manika Batra. 26-year-old Sreeja created this history on her birthday. In the round of 32, she defeated Singapore's Zheng Jian 4-2.
Deepika Kumari has reached the pre-quarterfinals i.e. Round 16 of the individual event of women's archery. In Round 32, she defeated Quinty Roffen of the Netherlands 6-2. She has won this match one-sidedly. In the pre-quarterfinals, she will face Tokyo Olympics medalist Michelle Kroppen of Germany. Bhajan Kaur has qualified. Apart from her, Bhajan Kaur has qualified for the pre-quarterfinals in this event. The match between these two will now be played on Saturday, August 3.
The Indian hockey team has also taken another step towards the medal. The team has qualified for the quarter-finals from Group B by performing brilliantly. India had won against New Zealand and Ireland. The team played a draw against Argentina. Now Belgium has defeated Australia in this group. With this, the Indian team has reached the quarter-finals. In the group stage, India still has to play one match each with Belgium and Australia.
On the 5th day of Paris Olympics, Shreyasi Singh, a female MLA from Jumui assembly of Bihar, was eliminated from the shotgun trap event of women's shooting. She has won for India in the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games. However, she did not get success in the Paris Olympics.
Rajeshwari Kumari, who participated with her in the same event, has also been eliminated. Shreyasi Singh finished 23rd, while Rajeshwari finished 22nd. In the women's table tennis singles event, Manika Batra had to face defeat at the hands of Japan's Mu Hirano in the pre-quarterfinals. With this, she was out of the race to win a medal in the Paris Olympics.
Indian equestrian Anush Agarwal was eliminated from the first stage of equestrian i.e. the qualifier round. He finished 9th in Group E. However, despite being eliminated from the Paris Olympics, he has created history. 24-year-old Anush is the first Indian to have participated in this sport in the Olympics.
Apart from him, Tarundeep Rai was eliminated from the individual event of men's archery. He lost 6-4 to Tom Hall of Great Britain in the round of 64. There were a lot of expectations from Tarundeep, but his performance was very disappointing. Balraj Panwar, who performed brilliantly in this Olympics, was also eliminated from the semi-final match of rowing.
