A boxing match of Paris Olympics 2024 is in a lot of controversy. This controversy arose when Italian boxer Angela Carini and Algerian boxer Iman Khelife clashed in the pre-quarterfinals of the women's welterweight category. Actually Angela Carini left the match midway and Iman Khelife won in 46 seconds. After this, it was alleged that a female boxer was pitted against a male boxer. Now a big statement has come from the International Olympic Committee on this issue.
In fact, Algerian boxer Iman Khalif has been in controversies regarding gender before.
Man Khalif was declared ineligible for gender a few hours before the gold medal match of the 2023 Boxing World Championship. But the International Olympic Committee i.e. IOC recently allowed her to play in the Olympics 2024. Now after her first round match, this controversy has arisen again and many people believe that it is wrong for Man Khalif to play in the women's category. Former British boxer Anthony Faller has condemned this. Now the International Olympic Committee has issued a statement saying that all athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the eligibility and entry rules of the competition, as well as all applicable medical rules set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU).
As in previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of athletes are based on their passports. The PBU used the Tokyo 2020 boxing rules as a baseline to develop its rules for Paris 2024. This was aimed at minimising the impact on athletes' preparations and guaranteeing continuity between Olympic Games. These Tokyo 2020 rules were based on the post-Rio 2016 rules that were in place before the IOC's suspension of the International Federation of Boxing in 2019 and withdrawal of its recognition in 2023.
The International Olympic Committee further said in its statement that we have seen misleading information in some reports about two female athletes competing in the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Both athletes have been playing in international boxing tournaments in the women's category for many years, including the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the International Boxing Association (IBA) World Championships and tournaments approved by the IBA.
Both these athletes were victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. They were suddenly disqualified without any due process at the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023. This decision was initially taken only by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. Apart from this, he said that the IOC is saddened by the mistreatment of the two athletes at present.
