The International Cricket Council (ICC) is currently monitoring the situation of Bangladesh as the country is set to host the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 which will be kicking off from October 3. The internal security team is monitoring this distress in Bangladesh.
Their prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already fled the country. 'The ICC has an independent security monitoring system across all its member nations. The situation is being monitored closely but with seven weeks left for the tournament to begin, it will be too early to comment whether the tournament will be shifted from Bangladesh,' an ICC board member told PTI annonymously. Bangladesh has been facing severe demonstration over quota system that is very controversial as it reserves 30% jobs for the families of veterans who have fought in the 1971 liberation war.
The ICC source added that a similar situation of distress also happened in Sri Lanka in March 2022 when protesters went all out of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa's official residence citing corruption and inflation. The World Cup 2024 is scheduled to be held in Dhaka and Sylhet.
As of now, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has 'strongly advised Indian nationals against travelling to Bangladesh till further notice.' The BCCI has always worked with the advice government in these kind of situations. ICC has possible plans for unavoidable situations. Sri Lanka can be an option, especially considering the fact that 2012 men's T20 World Cup was also held there between September and October.
