You must remember the picture when wrestler Vinesh Phogat was seen struggling with the Delhi Police. In those pictures, she was seen struggling hard to free herself from the clutches of the khaki uniformed men. Just a year ago, many people were pleading for justice along with two Olympic medalists of India on the streets of Delhi. Those two medalists were Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia. But along with them, there was also a cry of Vinesh Phogat in the plea of many people. The same Vinesh Phogat who makes Tuesday, i.e. 6 August, a historic date and becomes the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final of wrestling in the Olympics.
In such a situation, it is very important to know what happened to Vinesh, who had moved towards winning the gold medal in women's wrestling at the Paris Olympics by defeating Cuba's Yusnelis Guzman 5-0, that the Delhi Police had to clash with her.The country's leading wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia opened a front against former Wrestling Association of India president and former BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh on January 18, 2023. Brijbhushan was accused of sexual exploitation. All this protest was being done at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
About three days after this protest, the government woke up and on January 21, the then Sports Minister assured the wrestlers and ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the matter. However, in view of the serious allegations, Anurag Thakur formed a five-member inspection committee on January 23 to investigate the allegations. When the investigation and the committee did not yield any concrete results, the wrestlers again reached Jantar Mantar on 23 April, questioning the committee's investigation and started protesting.
A day after this, the wrestlers lodged a complaint of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with the Delhi Police, but no FIR was registered. However, after the Supreme Court's direction, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against Brij Bhushan under the POCSO Act and another case.
There was a lot of pushing and shoving and clashes between the wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and the police at midnight on May 3.
The wrestlers alleged that some Delhi Police personnel misbehaved with them and a jawan, under the influence of alcohol, even beat up a wrestler with a stick. That wrestler was sent to the hospital. However, after this incident, many leaders posted on social media in their support. Vinesh Phogat's brother Dushyant and wrestler Rakesh Yadav were injured in this clash. This matter was not over yet.
The wrestlers continued to sit on the protest and on 23 May announced that all of them would hold a Mahila Maha Panchayat in front of the new Parliament on 28 May. Just this one announcement showed the country a sight that the people of the country had not seen till now. On 28 May, when the new Parliament was being inaugurated, the players clashed with the police and it shook the whole country. A fierce clash was seen between the Delhi Police and them to stop all the wrestlers from reaching the Parliament. All the wrestlers sitting on the dharna were moving towards the parliament. But then the police stopped them. There was a fight between the two and in the confrontation with the police, they fell on the road. Some were pulling their hair, some their clothes and some were using their strength just so that the fallen wrestlers could not get up. Although they may not have been able to get up at that moment, but this victory has taken Vinesh to such a height that the hands in khaki uniform that were trying to stop Vinesh that day. Now those same hands will be applauding Vinesh's victory.
Wrestlers would have never imagined that they would have to go through such circumstances for raising their voice against former Wrestling Federation of India president and former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Many female wrestlers, including Vinesh and Sakshi, had accused Brij Bhushan of molestation, sexual exploitation and arbitrariness. They also demanded the immediate removal of Brij Bhushan. But who knew that the players who are called the pride of India would take to the streets like this for justice.
At that time, many people had raised questions about Vinesh's game. Even at the beginning of this year, Vinesh had to face many types of protests. Vinesh may not have faced any physical problem due to this protest, but somewhere all this has a mental effect. Many times people give up at such times. But Vinesh did not give up. Why should anyone give up, after all, it is only the player who does not give up till the end and instead of sinking in despair, defeats his opponents.
