As the anticipation builds for the IPL 2025 auction, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering reinstating an old rule that could significantly benefit the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
This potential rule change raises intriguing questions: Could MS Dhoni play in IPL 2025 as an uncapped player? And if so, could CSK retain their legendary captain for just Rs 4 crore? According to a report by News18, the BCCI is mulling over the reintroduction of a rule that would allow retired international cricketers to be classified as uncapped players in the IPL if they have been out of international cricket for at least five years.
This rule, which was in place from 2008 to 2021 but was never utilized, could be a game-changer for CSK if it comes back into play. MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in August 2020, would reach the five-year retirement mark in August 2025. If the BCCI announces this rule with a specific cut-off retirement date, Dhoni could potentially be listed as an uncapped player, allowing CSK to retain him for a modest sum of Rs 4 crore.
This would provide CSK with a significant financial advantage in the mega-auction, freeing up more funds to bolster their squad. "There is a bright possibility of the rule coming back. It was discussed at length during the meeting last month and could well be brought back when the player regulations are announced," a source informed News18. Even if the rule is reintroduced and Dhoni does not qualify as an uncapped player in 2025, he would likely fall under this category in 2026, assuming he continues to play. This prospect raises further speculation about Dhoni's future in the IPL and whether CSK can capitalize on this potential loophole to retain their iconic leader at a reduced cost. There's little doubt that CSK would retain Dhoni if he chooses to extend his playing career.
Despite stepping down as captain before IPL 2024, handing over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni remains one of the team's most reliable finishers. His performances in the past two seasons demonstrate his enduring value to the team. In IPL 2024, Dhoni scored 161 runs off 73 balls, while in 2023, he amassed 104 runs off 57 balls. The potential reinstatement of this rule adds an exciting layer of strategy to the upcoming IPL auctions.
CSK, known for their loyalty to players and shrewd auction strategies, could once again be at the forefront of an innovative approach to squad building. The cricketing world eagerly awaits the BCCI's final decision, which could not only impact Dhoni's IPL future but also reshape the auction dynamics for years to come.
