South Africa defeated West Indies by 40 runs in the second Test. With this, it also won the 2-Test series by 1-0. The first match of the Test series between the two teams was a draw. This is South Africa's 10th consecutive Test series win against West Indies, in which the record-breaking performance of its spinner Keshav Maharaj has played an important role. It is not easy for a team to register a win after 7 batsmen get out without opening their account in a match. But, South Africa did this very well in its own hosting. And, apart from Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder also played a small role in this.
To win the second test match, South Africa had set a target of 263 runs for West Indies. This target was not big considering the time left in the test match. And, the reason behind this was that 7 South African batsmen got out on zero. A 92-year-old dreadful situation came to the fore. In fact, this has happened with South Africa for the first time since 1932, when 7 of its batsmen could not open their account in a single test match. In this, 4 South African batsmen - Bauma, Mulder, Maharaj and Rabada - got out for ducks in the first innings, while 3 batsmen - David, Maharaj and Burger - got out for ducks in the second innings.
The direct impact of 7 batsmen getting out for ducks was seen on South Africa's score board which could only score 160 runs in the first innings and 246 runs in the second innings. In such a situation, the amazing performance of South African bowlers compensated for the failure of the batsmen. Mulder, Rabada and Maharaj wreaked such havoc that the West Indies team remained 40 runs away from the target of victory.
In the first innings too, they could only score 144 runs. For South Africa, Wiaan Mulder was the most successful bowler in the first innings, taking 4 wickets for 32 runs in 9 overs. While the West Indies team could not chase 263 runs in the second innings and were all out for just 222 runs, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada, who took 3 wickets each, played an important role in this. By taking 2 wickets in the second innings, Wiaan Mulder took a total of 6 wickets in the match, for which he was chosen as the Player of the Match.
On the other hand, Keshav Maharaj took 13 wickets in the Test series against West Indies by taking a total of 5 wickets in the second Test. For this, he was chosen as the Player of the Series. Along with this, he also became the spinner to take the most number of wickets (171) in Tests for South Africa.
