If a ball coming at a stormy speed hits the thumb of a batsman, then the condition he is in is difficult to describe. Many batsmen have had to struggle with this pain in their career. Often, after such an injury, the batsman either leaves batting for some time or retires hurt and is out of the entire match. It has rarely happened that the injured batsman returned to the field but the bowler who gave him pain was out of the match himself. Something similar happened in the Manchester Test between England and Sri Lanka, where fast bowler Mark Wood did not come out to bowl on the fourth day of the match.
On the third day of this match being played at Old Trafford, Sri Lanka came out on the field for their second innings. After a bad start, Angelo Mathews' excellent half-century innings saved them. During that time, Dinesh Chandimal was also at the crease with him for some time. Then Mark Wood's 149 kmph fast bouncer hit Chandimal's right thumb and he started writhing in pain. He had to leave the field right there and was taken to the hospital, where his thumb was scanned. Chandimal's exit like this was a big setback for Sri Lanka but after some time they got relief because there was no fracture in the thumb.
Then after the sixth wicket fell, he returned to bat and stayed till the end. It was here that fate took a different turn and Mark Wood, who sent Chandimal to the hospital, himself got injured. While bowling in his 11th over, he suddenly felt pain during the run-up and he stopped there. He had to leave the over in the middle and return. Now on the fourth day of the match, the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Wood had left the field due to a thigh muscle injury and would not bowl on the fourth day.
The ECB said that the medical team will continue to examine him, after which a decision will be taken on his further playing on the fifth day of the match. Mark Wood bowled brilliantly in this match and put the Sri Lankan batsmen in trouble with his fast pace. Before injuring Chandimal, he had taken 2 wickets by bowling economically in both the innings. In his absence, the Sri Lankan batsmen will feel relieved in the second innings, while the rest of England's bowlers will have to put in more effort.
