Wrestling: India's Under-17 women's wrestling team was stranded at the Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan on Saturday after a stellar performance at the World Championships.
Nine women wrestlers and three coaches were scheduled to return to India on Saturday evening but were booked on different flights. Coach Jai Bhagwan, Shilpi Sheoran and Rekha Rani were to catch an Emirates flight to Dubai while the young wrestlers were booked on Qatar Airways. The team won the team championship by winning a total of 8 medals including 5 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. The coach flight (EK904) was scheduled to depart from Amman at 6:10 pm and reach Dubai at 10:10 pm. From there he boarded another flight at 3:55 am and was scheduled to reach Delhi at 9:05 am.
The wrestlers' flight (QR401) was scheduled to depart at 8:30 pm and reach Doha at 11:10 am, but according to the flight status, it departed at 6:18 pm. However, it is not clear if the flight schedule was changed.
A source in the Indian contingent in Amman said, “The young women wrestlers missed their flight. There is a lot of confusion about what happened. A separate flight should not have been booked for the young wrestlers. The Sports Authority of India should have booked a single flight for them.” They are all young.
A source said that ideally the young wrestlers should have been accompanied by at least one coach. Now efforts are being made to bring them on the first available flight.
When contacted, a Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) official said efforts were being made to bring the wrestlers back home on the first available flight.
