Pakistan to sack Babar Azam and Shan Masood: Report

Pakistan have failed to impress across formats in international cricket. Babar Azam is under the scanner for his ordinary batting display and below-par captaincy in white-ball formats.

According to GEO News, the Pakistan Cricket Board is likely to sack Babar and replace him with Mohammad Rizwan. The wicker-keeper batter will initially lead in one-day internationals and T20I cricket.

Babar hasn’t been given a chance to lead in the Champions One-Day Cup, which shows that he might not stay as the team’s captain in the near future.

PCB announced five teams for the upcoming tournament and named Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Haris and Saud Shakeel as captains of their respective teams.

The sources said that the Men in Green will get a new skipper in place of Babar later this year. The appointment will happen before the Australia tour in November. Gary Kirsten, the head coach in white-ball formats, spoke to the cricket board officials in July in this matter.

Rizwan’s name will be discussed for the role and if all the decision-makers agree, he might be appointed as captain across formats in the future.

Babar had stepped down after the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, but the right-handed batter was reappointed before the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.

Shan Masood was given Test captaincy before the three-match series against Australia. However, the visiting team lost all the matches. The next red-ball series against Bangladesh ended in another embarrassment as the hosts lost 0-2. Masood has lost five Tests as the team’s skipper.
