India's successful campaign in Paris Paralympic Games 2024 has come to an end. On the last day of the games, India had claimed in only one event, in which no medal came. With this, the most successful Paralympic Games for India so far also came to an end. On the last day, Pooja Ojha had presented her claim in 200 meters canoeing but she finished fourth and missed the medal. In this way, India's final medal tally in Paris Paralympics was 29 medals, including 7 gold medals. This is the highest number of medals for India in any Paralympics. During this, for the first time, a gold medal came in archery, while the highest number of 17 medals came in athletics, which is a new record.
September 8 was the last day of the Paralympic Games in Paris, but on this day only one athlete from India was in the competition. Pooja Ojha made a bid for the women's 200 meter KL1 category canoe sprint but she could not pose any special challenge. Pooja finished fourth among the 5 participants in this event. She completed her race in 1:27.23 minutes, while the Italian athlete who won bronze by finishing third completed the race in 1:04.03 minutes. The gold medal went to the player from Canada (57.00 seconds) and the silver went to China (57.26 seconds).
In this way, the number of medals of India could not go beyond 29 but it also proved to be the most successful Paralympic campaign in the history of the country. Earlier, India had won a total of 19 medals in the Tokyo Paralympics and that was the best performance then. This time before the games started, a target of 25 medals was set but not only did India's fighting para-athletes achieve this target but also went beyond that and won 10 more medals than Tokyo. The special thing is that the number has increased in all three types of medals.
While only 5 gold medals were won in Tokyo, this time 7 gold medals were won by Indian athletes. Similarly, instead of 8 silvers in Tokyo, 9 silvers and 5 bronzes were won in Paris, this time 13 bronzes were won.Among these, there were two players who won gold in Tokyo and defended their title in Paris. In women's standing rifle shooting, Avani Lekhara won gold again like last time. Javelin throw star Sumit Antil won gold in Paris after Tokyo and this time he achieved this success with a Paralympic record.
Harvinder Singh won India's first Paralympic gold medal in archery. Similarly, Dharambir also won the gold medal for India for the first time in club throw. Navdeep Singh also won gold in the second category of javelin throw, while Nitesh Kumar won gold in para badminton and Praveen Kumar won gold in high jump. At the same time, 17-year-old archer Sheetal Devi surprised the whole world by hitting accurate shots without hands. She also won bronze in the mixed team along with Rakesh Kumar. Not only this, a total of 17 medals were won from athletics alone, which was only 2 less than the 19 medals won in all the sports in the last games.
This time the country also got medals in some new events. Kapil Parmar won the bronze medal in Judo and became the first Indian athlete to do so. Harvinder's archery gold was historic. Sprinter Preeti Pal created history by winning medals in 2 different events. She won bronze medals in women's 100 meter and 200 meter races. Overall, India finished 18th with 29 medals, while India had got 24th place in Tokyo.
