Australia is planning a strategic reshuffle for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy -- India vs Australia Test series --, with Steve Smith likely to return to his familiar No. 4 position in the batting lineup.
As reported by SEN, Australia will most likely move Smith back in the middle order to make space for India's nemesis Travis Head. Steve Smith, traditionally a linchpin in Australia's middle order, was moved to the opening slot alongside Usman Khawaja following David Warner's retirement at the beginning of the year. This strategic shift, however, has yielded mixed results.
Smith managed only one half-century and averaged 28.50 from four Tests against the West Indies and New Zealand, with his standout performance being an unbeaten 91 against the Caribbean team in Brisbane.
4, while Travis Head may take up the opening role.

Smith's return to No. 4 could be crucial for the Australian side. Known for his solid middle-order performances, Smith is the ninth-highest run-scorer in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy's history with 1,887 runs in 18 matches. In contrast, Head, known for his aggressive batting style, is expected to partner with Khawaja at the top of the order, replacing Smith. This change aims to bring a dynamic start to Australia's innings, reminiscent of the impact David Warner once had. Australia's strategy will be put to the test as they seek to reverse their fortunes against India.
The Indian team has been formidable in recent years, winning two consecutive Test series in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21. The upcoming series, starting on November 22.
