Team India missed out on winning the title in the ODI World Cup played in India last year. In the final of the World Cup, the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma had to face defeat against Australia in the final. The Indian team had performed brilliantly throughout the tournament but the defeat in the final broke everyone's heart. Team India's bag may have been empty but the country benefited by thousands of crores from this World Cup. The ICC has released a report 10 months after the World Cup and said that the tournament played in October-November 2023 brought more than Rs 11 thousand crore to the Indian economy, which includes tourism to stadium upgrades and food and beverage activities.
On Wednesday, September 11, the ICC released a detailed report on the impact of the World Cup 2023 on the Indian economy. The report states that the 45-day tournament has had a direct economic impact of $1.39 billion i.e. Rs 11,637 crore on the Indian economy. This benefit has come mainly through the 10 host cities of the World Cup, where not only was there a huge investment by the ICC and BCCI in the construction related activities due to improvements made in the stadiums, but there was also an increase in the movement of tourists in these cities.
During the World Cup, a large number of foreign and domestic tourists visited the host cities, where they not only watched the matches but also participated in other activities. About Rs 7222 crore was earned from the movement, accommodation, travel and food of the tourists. The report states that a total of 12.5 lakh people watched this World Cup, which is the highest in the history of the tournament. Out of this, 75 percent of the fans came to watch the World Cup for the first time.
Not only this, 19 percent of foreign spectators visited India for the first time. Along with this, the organization of the World Cup also created a total of about 48 thousand permanent and temporary jobs in different sectors during this period.As far as the World Cup is concerned, it started with a match between England and New Zealand in Ahmedabad on 5 October, which ended with the title final between India and Australia on 19 November in Ahmedabad itself. Australia won the title for a record sixth time by defeating India by 6 wickets.
