India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav declared fit to play in Duleep Trophy final round
India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has been declared fit and will take part in the final round Duleep Trophy (domestic red-ball tournament) which starts on September 19. The dashing batter will replace Sarfaraz Khan, who is in the India squad for first Bangladesh Test, in Abhimanyu Eswaran-led India B against India D.
Surya complained of a thumb injury before the pre-season Buchi Babu Invitational when he had problem in gripping the bat. The batter, however, has now been cleared and now will take part in the third and final round fixture.
The batter has already expressed desire to play Test cricket but is aware of the competition in the side.
"There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place and even I want to earn that spot again," he had said last month.
"I made my debut for India in Tests.
After that, I got injured as well. There were a lot of people who got an opportunity and have done well too. They deserve that opportunity right now," Surya added.
"Going forward, if I have to play, then I will automatically play.
That's not in my control. What's in my power right now is to play [ongoing tournaments like Buchi Babu and Duleep] and then see what happens. But yes, I'm really looking forward to it. There are ten Test matches lined up [for India this season] and I'm obviously excited for some red-ball fun."
Surya was recently appointed India's T20I skipper after Rohit Sharma's retirement from the format following the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph.
He was picked ahead of all-rounder Hardik Pandya who was touted for long to succeed Rohit as India skipper not just in T20Is but across formats.
Pandya, owing to being injury-prone, seems to have lost the race to become India's captain, at least for now.
