The Indian women's cricket team was not happy as the umpires called back New Zealand's Amelia Kerr in the Women's T20 World Cup match on Friday (October 4).
India are playing the Black Caps in their first group-stage match in Dubai. Amid the match, there has already been a moment of controversy which made the Indian camp disgruntled. In the 14th over, Amelia Kerr was run out as Harmanpreet Kaur inflicted her demise with a magnificent throw.
The New Zealand batter also started to head back to the hut after her dismissal, but was later called back by the umpires. IND-W vs NZ-W: Why was Amelia Kerr called back by Umpires? The umpires called Amelia Kerr back, much to the disappointment of the entire Indian women's team. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was visibly unhappy, whereas India coach Amol Muzumdar was also not satisfied and had an intense chat with the fourth umpire. But the reason Amelia was brought back was explained as a dead-ball situation. Upon picking up the ball, Harmanpreet Kaur was running in as it was the end of the over.
But seeing the Black Caps players taking a second, she fired the ball to the wicketkeeper and Kerr was run out. But the umpires had already called over even before New Zealand took the second run, much to the surprise of many.
The play was held up for a few minutes but eventually, the Indian camp had to abide by the umpires' decision.
New Zealand were relieved with Kerr going back to the middle. But Amelia Kerr didn't last long after that. In the very next ball she faced, the Kiwi batter fell in the bowling of Renuka Singh. The reprieve was shortlived as the 23-year-old had to eventually head back to the pavilion, after scoring 13 runs off just 22 balls.
