Rohit Sharma once wished to lead KKR in IPL.

New Delhi: Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has been the talk of the town for the last few weeks. Be it Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit as Mumbai Indians skipper or the rumours of him putting his name into the mega auction, the Rohit Sharma episode has kept every cricket lover engaged. Amidst all the rumours, an old video of Rohit surfaced online where the Indian captain wished to lead Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League apart from Mumbai Indians.

The video dates back to 2019, during an interview with CNBC TV18. In the interview, Rohit was asked which team apart from Mumbai Indians he wishes to captain in IPL if given a chance. The India opener was quick to pick the Shah Rukh Khan co-owned franchise.

“Eden Gardens is my favorite ground. Many events of my cricketing career happened there. So if I have to lead, I will choose KKR,” said Rohit. The Mumbaikar started his IPL journey with Deccan Chargers. He played for Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010 before shifting base to Mumbai Indians in 2011.

Two years later, Rohit was named as the Mumbai Indians captain in the middle of the season when then skipper Ricky Ponting chose to step down from leadership. And the rest is history. Under Rohit, Mumbai Indians won the championship five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

It was Rohit success at Mumbai Indians that elevated him to India captaincy in 2021 when Virat Kohli decided to relinquish from the role. However, Rohit was replaced by Hardik Pandya as the Mumbai Indians captain ahead of IPL 2024, a decision that didn’t go well with the fans.

During the ongoing IPL, Pandya was booed by the fans wherever they went to play. Such was the level of booing that even the presenter at the toss had to ask the fans to ‘behave’. The incident happened during Mumbai Indians’ first home game against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium.

Meanwhile, Pandya’s captaincy era didn’t start well as Mumbai Indians lost their first three games on the trot before pocketing their first points with a win over Delhi Capitals last week. The five-time champions will next face Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Thursday.
