India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Mohammed Siraj steaming in for the fourth ball of the sixth over, his third. Usman Khawaja facing up, he has scored 13 in 22 balls, McSweeney at the other end on two off 11.

India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: The Indians are deep in discussion at the boundary.
Akash Deep and Siraj, who are doing some warm-ups. KL Rahul is getting some catching practice. All three players eventually join their teammates in the loose huddle. There have been a lot of discussions there among the Indians during this short break, wonder if there are going to be any course corrections from them.India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Some movement there from the ground staff. It looks like they are ready to take off the covers. The rain had settled into that irritating mizzle but it has disappeared. There might even be some sunshine as well.
All looking good.India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: The Indian players haven't really cared to go back up to their dressing room. Rohit Sharma can be seen having a chat with fielding coach T Dilip first and assistant coach Morne Morkel after that. Rohit and Kohli were just too tight in first and second slip, so much so that the former was seemingly completely out of play. Wonder if that is what Dilip was talking to him about.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: There is the rain. It was there in the forecast. Let's hope the forecast continues to be right and these are only scattered showers.
For now, the players walk off and the ground staff come in with the covers.Australia 19/0 in 5.3 overs
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: McSweeney gets off the mark with a single off the first ball and then Khawaja runs two more third ball. Siraj then sends in a short ball that comes up to Khawaja's waist, the Australia opener pulls it emphatically through midwicket for a four. Single off the next ball, Khawaja is on nine off 16 at the end of the over, McSweeney on one off eight.
Siraj goes off the field after that over.
Australia 14/0 in 4 overs
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Khawaja met the second ball with a lovely drive but Gill stopped any runs with a great dive at mid-off. Then Khawaja beaten with a cracker of a fourth delivery that is angled in and nips away just as it reaches the batter. The batter then tucks the fifth through midwicket to run two runs and he is off.
Australia 6/0 in 3 overs
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: India start off with consecutive maidens. There is a lot of moisture on the pitch, with Ravi Shastri saying on comms that Rishabh Pant spoke of his spikes sinking in completely before the start of the match.
No pace off the pitch. McSweeney was batting well outside his crease there.Australia 4/0 after 2 overs
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Bumrah starts off with a maiden, technically speaking. Stays somewhere in the late 120s and early 130s as far as the speeds are concerned in the first over. He squares up Khawaja second ball and the third runs off to the boundary off his thigh pad. Khawaja leaves the next two length balls alone and is then beaten as Bumrah goes slightly fuller and gets it to move away late.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: All right then, Usman Khawaja is set to face the incredible Jasprit Bumrah. Nathan McSweeney showed what he is made off in Adelaide, he is at the other end. The cordon is packed, three slips and a gully. Let's go!
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Australians do know how to set up a sporting spectacle and they haven't disappointed this time either, as has been the case in the last two Tests as well. Matthew Hayden and Zaheer Khan bring out the Border-Gavaskar Trophy before the two teams are led out by their captains for the national anthem.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Shubman Gill may have provided the initial push at Gabba 2021 but lets face it, not many thought that India would actually go for the target and succeed after he fell. Well, Rishabh Pant had other ideas. He smashed an unbeaten 89 off 138 balls in what is arguably among the most awe-inspiring innings by a visiting batter in a Test match Down Under. Regardless of what happens in his career, this is a legend no one can take away from Pant.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Sunil Gavaskar and Matthew Hayden on the pitch report today. The overhead conditions are challenging, they say, it's been wet going into the game. Cloudy conditions, there'll be plenty of assistance for the pacers, movement off the pitch, plenty of carry and batting shouldn't be easy. You need to respect the bowlers in the first two hours and then there are runs on this surface, says Gavaskar. Going further, spin will play a role going into the 4th and 5th days, says Hayden.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Rohit seemed quite clear on what India wanted to do as soon as he saw the toss has fallen in his favour.
Here is a gist of what he said: "We're going to bowl first. Little bit overcast and little bit of grass, looks a bit soft as well, want to make best use of the conditions. Lot of cricket to be played, both teams have played good cricket in the last two games. Big game for us here, we'll do what is expected of us. We'll play good cricket, we understand we have to capture some moments, we didn't do that in the previous game which is why we lost. It's absolutely buzzing, the guys are looking forward to the match, we're looking forward to coming out here and playing. Looks a little soft at this point in time, conditions bit overcast as well, it will get better to bat as it goes on. We've made two changes, Jadeja and Akash back in place of Ashwin and Harshit."
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Ravichandran Ashwin and Harshit Rana are sitting out and Ravindra Jadeja and Akash Deep take their respective places. Well, India chased the last time around and won, they have decided to do it again this time.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Rohit Sharma calls it right and India are fielding first today. It is nice and cloudy out there...
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: It looks like India could be making a change to their bowling lineup. Whether it is going to be a straight swap in the pace battery or the addition of one more fast bowler, well we will have to see. Toss coming up…
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Sunil Gavaskar, one half of the name of the trophy that the two teams are fighting it out for in this series, has said that Bumrah is primarily doing the heavy lifting for India at the moment and the rest of the pacers need to step up.
"Mohammed Siraj is a good foil, but he has to start getting five wickets in an innings. Otherwise, the load is being picked up mainly by Jasprit Bumrah. But if Siraj can pick up two, three wickets, keep on breaking partnerships, then he certainly helps Jasprit Bumrah. Harshit Rana, the newcomer, bowled impressively in Perth, wasn't as impressive in the second game at Adelaide. Maybe he just couldn't find his rhythm, therefore was not bowling the length that he should have, or the line that he should have. But hopefully he will have learned. And then that makes it easy. It takes the load off Bumrah. Bumrah can then come in, in short bursts of four or five overs, and be much more effective," said Gavaskar on Star Sports.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: The fact that India won at the Gabba in 2021 with a fast bowling lineup led by Mohammed Siraj, playing his first Test series, and consisting of T Natarajan, Shardul Thakur and an injured Navdeep Saini led to justified optimism of the team's depth in that department. Considering the evidence thus far in this series, though, reality hasn't quite lived up to those expectations.
The brilliant Jasprit Bumrah has taken 12 wickets at a stunning average of 11.25 and is the leading wicket-taker in this series at the moment. Siraj is the fourth highest overall and the second highest wicket-taker for India and he has picked 9 but at an average of 19.77. Third seamer Harshit Rana did well in the second innings in Perth but the numbers reflect how underwhelming he had been otherwise, particularly in Adelaide. He has picked four wickets at an average of a whopping 50.75.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Regardless of what happens in this Test, 2024 will be remembered as the year when Yashasvi Jaiswal announced himself as an all-format monster. Granted that he is yet to play an ODI but Jaiswal ends 2024 with a career average of 54.89 in 16 Tests and career strike rate of 164.31 in 23 T20Is.
Jaiswal has scored 1304 runs in the 25 Test innings he has played this year at an average of 54.33 and an incredible strike rate of 72.56. He has scored seven half-centuries and three centuries. Of those tons, the one in Perth is the only one he couldn't convert into a double century.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Yashasvi Jaiswal has had the kind of year that batters can only dream of in Test cricket, let alone one who is yet to touch 20 international caps in the format. He bounced back from coping a duck in his first senior innings in Australia by scoring an imperious 161 in 297 balls in the second innings in Perth. Then he, like most of his teammates, found the pink ball a bit too much to handle, falling for scores of 0 and 24 in Adelaide. Now we are back to the red-ball stuff and Australia are perfectly aware of how dangerous it can be to allow Jaiswal time at the crease. Can he bounce back?
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: There has been a lot of Test cricket for India this year and their seniormost batters didn't quite arrive to the party. In 12 Tests, Rohit Sharma has scored 597 runs at a paltry average of 27.13. Take out the two centuries he has scored and Rohit has made just 363 runs in the rest of the 10 Tests he played in. For all the talk of him taking a more aggressive approach to Test batting this year, Rohit's strike rate stands at just 65.60 - Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored his 1304 runs in 13 Tests this year at 72.56. Virat Kohli, meanwhile, has scored 373 runs in eight Tests at an average of just 26.64. 100 of those runs came in an unbeaten century in Perth.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: It would've been unimaginable to use the word "inconsistent" to describe Virat Kohli when he was scoring centuries and knocking off records for fun before 2020 but that is pretty much what we have seen from the former Indian captain in Test cricket in recent years. Current captain Rohit Sharma seemed to have finally found his footing in the format after famously struggling in it for years before 2019 but he too hasn't been among the runs this year.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir did say before the start of the New Zealand series that for India, the batters simply set up the game and it is the bowlers who win you matches. While the logic behind that theory is sound, it cannot possibly be an excuse for batters to reduce the value of their wickets - bowlers can't really win you matches if the batters can't score runs. And in arguably one of the toughest tours in international cricket, it isn't much of a surprise that fans expect their side's senior batters to lead the way.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Nobody had beaten Australia in a Test match at the Gabba for 33 years between November 1988 and January 2021. And then, they were beaten twice. The first time by an Indian team who were forced to play a second string, some would even say third string, bowling attack. The second time by the West Indies, not the world-beaters that last celebrated at the Gabba, but the long-suffering version of the side whose Test credentials have been questioned at times in recent years. In many ways, the West Indies upstaged India. They were the first side to beat Australia in a pink-ball Test played anywhere in Australia. That was also their first Test win against Australia since 2003 and ther first Test win in the country since 1997. All this despite most players in the team hardly having any experience in international cricket.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: While there have been showers in parts of the city, it has to be noted that the area around the Gabba hasn't received any. Now, with just a few minutes over an hour to go for the toss, it is cloudy but no signs of rain yet. Keep your fingers crossed.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Pat Cummins and Shubman Gill were known to share a good bond while playing for KKR and the latter's little jibe at the Australian captain yesterday in his press conference was made with a smile on his face. The topic was Cummins saying that Australia could use the short ball often as it had given them significant success in the Adelaide Test.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: The Gabba is where it all started for this rivalry, it was where India faced Australia for the first time in international cricket in their first tour to a country apart from England way back in December 1947. As is the case with most international sides, India's overall history at the venue isn't a pretty one but all the previous defeats are quite significantly overshadowed by their extraordinary heist in 2021.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: There is a significant threat of rain hanging over the first day and the match itself as a whole. Parts of the city is receiving showers at this very moment in fact.
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Pat Cummins said yesterday that Josh Hazlewood is returning to the side in place of Scott Boland.
Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey(w), Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood
India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Live Score: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Rohit Sharma(c), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Devdutt Padikkal, Ravindra Jadeja, Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep
The Brisbane Cricket Ground in Woolloongabba, better known forever as simply the Gabba, was a ground where a win for Australia was taken for granted, as evidenced by Tim Paine's sledge to Ravichandran Ashwin during India's last tour of the country in 2020/21. And then, that fortress was destroyed not just once but twice, by two teams one would've never backed to win any Test in Australia, let alone at the Gabba. Australia now have the chance to re-establish that fortress as they face one of those two teams once again in a Test match at the Gabba while India are out to reinforce it. The additional stake, of course, is a place in the WTC final and the series lead. Stay tuned for more updates!
