Fox cricket's commentator Isa Guha has tendered an apology for using the word "primate" for Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

Guha apologized on the third day of the ongoing Australia-India Test at the Gabba in Brisbane.

During her commentary stint on the second day of the Test Guha said "well he is MVP, isn't he, most valuable primate", when Bumrah's role in India's 295-run victory in the Perth Test was being discussed.

"Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. Firstly I would like to apologize for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect of others.

And if you listen to full transcript, I only meant the highest praise for one of India's greatest players and someone I admire greatly as well. I am an advocate for equality and someone who has spent career thinking about inclusion and understanding the game, I am trying to frame the enormity of his achievements and I have chosen the wrong word and for that I am deeply sorry." said the 39-year-old former English cricketer. Guha is currently in Australia as part of Fox Cricket's commentary panel for the Australia v India Test series.

"As someone who is also of South Asian heritage, I hope people will recognize that there was no other intentional malice there. I hope this hasn't overshadowed what has been a great Test match so far and I look forward to how it progresses.

But once again I am really really sorry. " Guha added further.

Guha earned praise from former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri for saying sorry live on TV.

"Brave woman! To do it on live television and apologize it takes some steel. And you heard from the horses' mouth. As far as I am concerned, game over. People are entitled to make mistakes, we are all humans, and in the heat of the moment, like you saw with the Siraj incident, with Travis Head, sometimes when you have mike in your hand, things can happen. But to own up and put your hand up and say I am sorry, if things have gone out of place, takes courage, she has done it, let us move on. " Shastri said. The former Indian coach was sitting next to Guha when she was reading her statement.
