Former England captain Joe Root scored a century against Afghanistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Chasing 326 to stay alive in the tournament, Root kept the hopes of his team alive. He faced 98 balls and struck 10 fours in Lahore. Ben Duckett (38), Jos Buttler (38), and Harry Brook (25) got starts but couldn’t carry on with Root.

He has taken his hundred count to 17 in the fifty-over format. Earlier, Ibrahim Zadran posted the highest individual score in the history of the Champions Trophy to take the sub-continent team to 325/7 in 50 overs.

His 177 runs came off 146 balls, with the help of 12 fours and 6 sixes.

He shared two 100-plus partnerships with Hashmatullah Shahidi (40) and Mohammad Nabi (40). Azmatullah Omarzai managed 41 runs off 31 balls, including 3 sixes and 1 four.

England lost the opening match against Australia, and if they fail to beat Afghanistan, their chances of making it to the semis will be over.
