Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has expressed his interest in playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The left-arm quick, who stepped away from international cricket for the second time last year, revealed that he could be eligible to feature in the tournament by 2026. He stated that if an opportunity arises, he would be open to making his IPL debut.

“Next year tak meri opportunity ban rahi hai, agar hua to why not (By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, then why not).

I will play in the IPL,” Amir said while speaking on the Haarna mana hai show.

Pakistan players and IPL: A restricted history

Notably, Pakistani players were part of the inaugural IPL season in 2008. However, due to strained diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan, they have been barred from participating in the league since then. Despite this, former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood featured in the IPL as a foreign player, representing Punjab Kings in 2012 and 2013 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015, thanks to his British citizenship.

Amir, whose wife Narjis holds UK citizenship, is also in the process of obtaining a British passport. This could allow him to enter the IPL as an overseas player, similar to Mahmood.

Mohammad Amir picks his preferred IPL team

When asked about his preferred IPL team, Amir did not hesitate to name Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Former Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzadwho was part of the discussion, supported Amir’s selection, emphasizing that RCB has long struggled with its bowling attack.

“RCB need a bowler like Amir to fix their bowling woes. They have a good batting unit, but their bowling has always been a problem. If Amir plays for RCB, they will win the title,” Shehzad commented.
