The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new times restrictions, for recurring Super Over scenarios in the IPL 2025 season.

While the number of Super Overs to break a tie remains unlimited, the entire process must conclude within one hour of the match’s completion.

According to BCCI’s latest guidelines, the first Super Over must start within 10 minutes of the main match ending. If the first Super Over ends in a tie, the subsequent Super Over must commence within five minutes.

The match referee will determine when the final super over should be played if the one-hour limit is about to be exceeded.

The each team will be allowed one unsuccessful Decision Review System (DRS) per Super Over.

“As many Super Overs can be played until a winner is decided till one hour after the completion of the main match. The first Super Over has to start within 10 minutes of the main match finishing. If the first Super Over is a tie, then the subsequent Super Over must start five minutes after its completion,” said BCCI.

“The match referee will inform the captains which will be the final super over, if he feels that the period of 1 hour is going to be breached. All player warnings and penance time unserved in the main match will be carried forward into the Super Over.”

“The Match Referee will inform Captains of any Time restrictions subject to the MPC on interrupted Super Over. One unsuccessful review per Super Over for each team will be permitted.”

The rules of the Super Over in IPL are as follows

  • Each team will face six balls and the team with more runs wins, regardless of the lost wickets.
  • If a team loses two wickets, their innings ends.
  • Super Overs will continue until a winner is determined, within the one-hour limit.
  • The Super Over must begin 10 minutes after the main match ends, under normal circumstances.
  • Delays or interruptions allow for additional time, with a maximum of 20 minutes.
  • The Super Over is played on the same pitch unless otherwise decided by the match officials.
  • Only nominated players from the main match can participate.
  • Penalty time from the main match will apply to the Super Over.
  • The team that batted second in the main match will bat first in the Super Over.
  • Each team gets one unsuccessful player review per Super Over.
  • The fielding team will choose which ball to use from a box of spare balls.
  • The interval between overs during a Super Over is set at five minutes.

If a Super Over in IPL ends in a tie, another Super Over will be played within five minutes of the previous one. The team that batted second will bat first in the second Super Over.

If a batter gets dismissed during a Super Over, they will not be eligible to bat in the subsequent Super Over. Similarly bowlers who bowled in the previous Over cannot bowl in the next one.

If a Super Over or any subsequent Super Overs cannot be completed, the match will be declared a tie.

The introduction of these guidelines is to maintain order and fairness in situations where matches goes beyond regular playtime.

The IPL 2025 campaign will begin with defending Champions KKR facing RCB on March 22 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
