South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabadaone of modern cricket’s most fearsome pacers, has come under the spotlight — not for his bowling exploits, but for a personal setback that saw him exit IPL 2025 midway. What was earlier termed a “significant personal matter” by his franchise Gujarat Titans has now been revealed as a provisional suspension following a positive test for a recreational drug. Rabada’s public admission has added clarity to weeks of speculation, drawing both concern and support from the cricketing world.

Kagiso Rabada tests positive for a banned drug

Rabada is currently serving a provisional suspension after testing positive for a banned recreational drug, a development that led to his unexpected withdrawal from IPL 2025. The suspension stems from a violation that occurred during the SA20 tournament earlier this year, and while the substance has not been publicly identified, it falls under the category of non-performance-enhancing drugs.

Notably, Rabada has not featured in any competitive match since March 29.

He played only two matches for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025 before heading back to South Africa on April 3. The franchise had acquired the services of the pacer for ₹10.75 crore during the mega auction.

The Proteas pacer issues heartfelt apology

In a heartfelt statement released by the South African Cricketers’ Association, Rabada expressed deep remorse over the episode and thanked those who supported him during a difficult period.

“As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons.

This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug. I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations,” said Rabada.

The speedster reaffirmed his commitment to the game, adding, “I am serving a provisional suspension, and I am looking forward to returning to the game I love playing.”
