Punjab Kings confirmed on Friday that all its players and support staff are safe after the franchise’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was called off amidst rising tensions between India and Pakistan.
“We’re pleased to communicate that all our players, support staff, and everyone associated with Punjab Kings cricket operations are safe and secure. A heartfelt thank you to the BCCI, IPL, Indian Railways, Police, State authorities, and our internal operations team for ensuring the safe movement of players, coaches, families, and support staff from both Delhi Capitals & Punjab Kings, from Dharamsala to a secure location.
“We are especially grateful to our wing commanders for their calm and swift leadership, and to our CEO, Mr. Satish Menon, whose steady guidance has been instrumental throughout this process,” a statement from the franchise read.
The match on Thursday was called off after just 10.1 overs were bowled. Punjab was coasting at 122 for one when three floodlight towers went off at the venue. The spectators were soon evacuated and the match was subsequently called off.
“Yesterday’s game in Dharamshala was unforgettable, from B. Praak’s stirring tribute to our armed forces to the electric atmosphere in the stands. Thank you once again to every single person who played a part in ensuring the safety, success, and spirit of this journey,” the statement from PBKS added.
“Yesterday’s Delhi-Punjab IPL match had to be stopped due to security concerns, given the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions. Even before the match, there were strong indications that such a situation might arise. The HPCA and the Punjab Kings operations team were already in touch with the local administration in anticipation,” Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Director Sanjay Sharma was quoted as saying to Years.
After the match was called off, a special Vande Bharat train to New Delhi was arranged for members of both teams. Players, support staff, commentators, production crew members, and operations staff arrived at Safdarjung Railway Station on Friday night.
“Thank you, @RailMinIndia, for arranging a special Vande Bharat train on such short notice to ferry the players, support staff, commentators, production crew members, and operations staff to New Delhi. We deeply appreciate your swift response,” IPL posted on social media platform X.
The 2025 season of the IPL was suspended on Friday for a week. The BCCI will inform the teams and other stakeholders of the road ahead in due time.
