Former India player Sunil Gavaskar has heaped massive praise on Rohit Sharma‘s leadership abilities following his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old announced the decision after playing 67 Tests for India. Rohit led India in 24 Test matches, winning 12. In the 2021-23 World Test Championship (WTC), India were the runners-up under his leadership.

However, Rohit’s leadership was questioned when India lost back-to-back Test series against New Zealand and Australia and didn’t make it to the final of the 2023-25 WTC.In his column for Mid-day, Gavaskar discussed about Rohit’s captaincy..

“As a captain, he was determined to win matches m. His Bambaiya Hindi also delivered a serious message to the younger players, but with a touch of humour. Not only the cricket-loving public but even the media will miss the interactions they used to have with,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote.

Rohit’s Test career has ended but he continues to flourish as India’s white-ball captain. He guided the team to victories in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. He announced his retirement from T20Is after winning the global tournament in the West Indies. Rohit will continue to play ODIs for India.
