Delhi: On Monday, veteran player and former captain of the Indian team Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket. He said goodbye to his 14 -year -long Test career with a passionate message on Instagram. Kohli has recently become the third big Indian player to retire from Test cricket, before that Ravichandran Ashwin and Rohit Sharma also said goodbye to Test cricket.
Virat Kohli, who is considered to be the best batsman of the current era, played 123 Test matches in his career and scored 9230 runs. During this, he scored 30 centuries and 31 half -centuries. Kohli wrote on Instagram, “I am going with thankful hearts – for this game, for all the people with whom the field shared, and for every person who appreciated me.”
Kohli wrote ‘#269, signing off’ in his message, which caused many people to wonder what this number means. Actually, this is their test cap number. When Kohli made his Test debut in Jamaica against West Indies in 2011, he got the honor of becoming India’s 269th Test player. Praveen Kumar and Abhinav Mukund also made a Test debut in the same match.
Cap number in cricket means how much a player is making debut for his team. That is, Virat Kohli was the 269th Indian player who made his Test debut. Since then, this number has become special for Indian cricket.
Kohli is India’s fourth most successful Test batsman. Beyond him only Sachin Tendulkar (51 centuries), Rahul Dravid (36) and Sunil Gavaskar (34) are. Kohli also scored a double century 7 times, which is the highest by any Indian player. As captain, Kohli has scored 20 Test centuries, which is the highest as an Indian captain. Gavaskar scored 11 centuries as captain.
India won in 40 of Kohli’s 68 Tests, making him the most successful Test captain of India.
