Cheteshwar Pujara reflected on how Virat Kohli introduced a fitness-centric mindset to the Indian Test team, transforming their approach to the longest form of the game. After Kohli’s unexpected Test retirement, Pujara reflected on the cultural transformation that began with his appointment as captain in 2015.
Pujara stated, “When Virat took over as captain in 2015, he introduced a fitness-focused culture within the Indian team. While other teams were already prioritising fitness, the Indian team had to improve, and that was the time when the shift took place.”
Pujara contemplated Kohli’s enduring impact, particularly in his determination to prioritise fitness, as Virat Kohli concluded his distinguished Test career. When Kohli took over the captaincy, fitness became an integral part of the Indian Test squad culture. In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Pujara talked about how Kohli’s emphasis on fitness helped the team.
Kohli proposed the Yo-Yo test, which established clear expectations and encouraged accountability. While other teams had already understood the importance of fitness, Kohli urged India to prioritise it even more. This trend was reflected in the growth of India’s fast bowlers, who were able to maintain pressure for longer periods of time, particularly in overseas conditions.
Pujara also mentioned how Kohli’s strategy of focusing on taking 20 wickets in a Test match, sometimes choosing an additional bowler over an extra batter, cultivated an aggressive, results-oriented mindset.
“The number of fast bowlers who came into the Indian team at that time also had to work on their fitness. The whole team embraced this change, and at the same time, Virat dedicated a lot of attention to the Test format, aiming to make the team one of the best in the world.”
This mindset demanded sharpness in physical and mental aspects, with fielding, body language, and stamina taking precedence. Kohli’s own discipline set the tone for the entire squad.
