A lot has been happening in Indian cricket circles since Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket. The sub-continent team will soon welcome a new captain in the longest format, with Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant leading the list of contenders.
Former players have started taking sides, with some going with Bumrah while others taking Gill’s name.
Moeen Ali, who played international cricket for England and is currently representing Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2025, is in favour of Gujarat Titans’ leader Gill.
He mentioned that Jasprit Bumrah would have been an ideal choice for the BCCI, but due to a question mark on his availability for five Tests, the selectors will think of someone who can play all five Tests against England.
“I will go with Shubman Gill. It would have been Bumrah, considering his experience and track record as a captain. He has led India in the past. But because he has been marred with injuries, they will give the captain’s armband to someone who has performed well in the Test format. Gill is leading the Gujarat Titans, so they have a good captain. He is inexperienced, yes, but a good captain with a good brain. However, leading in England will be a challenge,” Moeen Ali told SKY Sports.
Gill led India in the five T20IS against Zimbabwe in 2024 and was Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. He is leading Gujarat for the second year in a row, and the franchise is number one in the standings in the ongoing 18th season. With 16 points from 11 matches, GT need one more win to make it to the playoffs.
