Nair performed brilliantly for Vidarbha in the last domestic season. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 779 runs in only 8 innings and scored 5 centuries, including four consecutive centuries. The position of number-4 batting order in Tests is not clear for Team India. It has become a challenging role after Kohli moved away from this place. Based on the way Karun performed in domestic cricket, he could be the best option for this role.”

Kumble also mentioned that Karun Nair has experience playing in England and has also played county cricket, which has a good understanding of the circumstances there. The former leg spinner said, “Even though Karun is beyond 30, he is still young. At this time you need a player who also has restraint with experience.”

Significantly, Karun Nair last played a Test match for India in 2017. He scored a triple century (303*) against England in Chennai, but despite this his career was limited to only 6 Test matches.
