If you enter the premises of Mathura, the 'Braj Bhoomi', you will feel a certain spirituality oozing. The Land of Lord Krishna is not just known for its close connection with mythology and spiritual abode, but it has been pioneering with a new concept.
In a pioneering initiative aimed at inmate rehabilitation, Mathura District Jail has launched the "Jail Premier League" (JPL), a cricket tournament modelled after the Indian Premier League (IPL).
This program seeks to promote physical fitness, mental well-being, and a sense of camaraderie among prisoners. All the participants were Jail inmates, biding their time behind the wall for offences. But JPL has been a fresh air in their lives. Their sorrow, troubles have transformed into joy and smile as those men behind the bars took part in the initiative, among many which is organized by Mathura Jail.

Commencing in April 2025, the JPL featured eight teams formed from various prison barracks, divided into two groups of four. Over the course of the tournament, 12 league matches and two semi-finals were conducted within the prison compound.
The final match saw the "Knight Riders" triumph over the "Capitals," with inmate Kaushal earning both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series accolades. Additionally, inmates Bhura and Pankaj were awarded the orange and purple caps respectively.

Jail Superintendent Anshuman Garg emphasized that the primary goal of the JPL was to provide inmates with a constructive outlet to alleviate stress and foster a sense of normalcy. While speaking with MyKhel in an exclusive chat, Garg mentioned the vision behind their initiative.
"We started the Jail Premier League a month ago. We see that the prisoners who come to us are under a lot of stress. So, there are a lot of people who are not able to get bail, or their relatives are not able to come to meet them. And there are a lot of people who are very sick. So, there are a lot of people who are in stress or depression. So, to overcome all these things, we saw sports become a good medium to connect people," Garg says to MyKhel.
The Superintendent also mentions the other initiatives such as Badminton and Volleyball competitions, which have been organised before as well. IOCL has aided the Jail committee by sending many sports equipment through their initiative.
Garg also emphasises three aspects inside the Jail which have helped the holistic development of an inmate on the path to his/her correctional journey - Spiritual, Physical and Intellectual development.
"We always believe that if we want to make the jail a reformatory, then we need to work on three things. One is for spiritual development, physical development and intellectual development. For physical development, sports leagues are organised. And for spiritual development, bhajans and kirtans are held from time to time along with laughter yoga as well. If we talk about intellectual development, quiz, essay competitions are organised by us. So when we work on these three levels, our inmates are engaged and can overcome their negativity to a large extent."
This initiative sets a precedent for correctional facilities nationwide, demonstrating that with creativity and commitment, prisons can become environments that support personal growth and transformation.
