Cricket South Africa (CSA) has reversed its earlier decision to recall players set to participate in the World Test Championship (WTC) final from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs. Initially, CSA directed players to return by May 26 to prepare for the WTC final against Australia, scheduled from June 11 to 15 at the iconic Lord’s. This decision would have forced several South African stars to miss the IPL playoffs, beginning on May 29, potentially affecting their franchises significantly.

Cricket South Africa allows its players to stay longer in IPL 2025

CSA director Enoch announced that preparations for the WTC final will now begin on June 3, allowing several key players to stay with their IPL teams for further games. The decision, made after discussions at the higher level which aims to strike a balance between franchise commitments and national responsibilities.

“Correction – the squad will resume training for the game on June 3rd. The matter is being discussed higher up than me. At ground level, we are focusing on preps for the WTC final,” Nkwe said to Sydney Morning Herald.

Earlier, Nkwe emphasized that it is finalizing arrangements with the IPL and BCCI to adhere to its original plan for WTC preparations, with May 26 initially set as the latest date for Test players to return.

“But one thing we’ve made it clear, and we are finalising that with IPL and BCCI, is sticking to our original plan when it comes to the WTC preparations. Obviously, with May 26 being the latest for the Test guys to come back,” he stated earlier.

Several key South Africa players plying their trade in IPL 2025

Eight key South African players are currently part of the IPL 2025 season, playing crucial roles for their respective franchises. The list is Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, Corbin Bosch and Wiaan Mulder. Their performances have been vital in their teams’ campaigns, showcasing South Africa’s strong talent pool ahead of the WTC final.
