In the IPL 2025 fixture between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Ekana Stadium, opener Abhishek Sharma produced a six that not only thrilled fans but also had unexpected financial repercussions.
The left-handed batter, known for his explosive powerplay striking, smashed a delivery over deep midwicket that ended up shattering the windshield of a display car near the boundary ropes.
The incident occurred in the early phase of SRH's innings when Sharma, facing a short-of-length delivery, unleashed a ferocious pull shot. The ball soared into the stands but struck the windshield of a Tata Curvv SUV stationed just beyond the boundary.
The sound of breaking glass echoed around the ground, drawing immediate attention from spectators, teammates, and commentators. But as the SRH player cracked the glass of the car, he will have to pay a hefty sum of Rs 5 lakh, for a bizarre rule which IPL set at the start of the season.
RCB vs SRH: Why will Abhishek Sharma have to pay 5 Lakh?
As part of a pre-season initiative tied to IPL 2025's partnership with an automotive sponsor, a clause had been introduced.
Prior to the tournament, Tata Motors announced an initiative aimed at promoting cricket in rural areas.
According to this initiative, any player who inadvertently damages the display car during a match would be required to donate cricket kits worth ₹5 lakh to support rural cricket development. Abhishek Sharma's powerful shot, while unintentional in its collateral damage, thus triggered this philanthropic clause. The funds will be directed toward providing cricket equipment to underserved regions, giving aspiring cricketers a better platform to pursue the game.
