Chennai Super won the Indian Premier League title in 2023, and they are under pressure to defend it. MS Dhoni left the captaincy ahead of the 17th season, and now Ruturaj Gaikwad is leading the five-time champions. The Men in Blue have won four matches while losing three contents.
Dhoni is still the best player of the franchise, and his cameos in IPL 2024 have set the stage on fire. In the last two matches against Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, he has recorded a strike rate of above 300.
Former India player Navjot Singh Sidhu said Dhoni is bigger than cricket. “When Chennai Super Kings are playing, the news is about Dhoni sitting in the dressing room. We talk about Dhoni doing push-ups or getting his body ready for the game. We don’t talk about cricket,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said on Star Sports.
He compared the former CSK captain to Greg Chappell and Sunil Gavaskar.
“There have been legends who have pushed out of the team at some stage of their careers. They were told that their services were not needed. And then there are players who are requested to continue for a few more years. They are kept in the team for a long duration. Dhoni is one of them. He is like Greg Chappell and Sunil Gavaskar, who were not forced to retire,” he added.
There are reports that Dhoni will bid adieu to IPL after the ongoing season. His knee is still troubling him, and the legendary cricketer is not promoting himself in the batting order.
