Ten people were killed and at least 50 were seriously injured after a stampede broke out on Wednesday (June 4) near the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where a massive crowd had congregated to attend a special felicitation for the newly-crowned IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Several RCB fans are said to have fallen unconscious too. While a lot of fans gathered for the felicitation held by the Karnataka State Cricket Association, visuals showed police shifting the injured persons and those who fell unconscious to a nearby hospital.

RCB touched base at the Garden City on Wednesday afternoon amid a roaring welcome from waiting fans, who lined up the streets to catch a glimpse of the star-studded side.

The Rajat Patidar-led team was received at the airport by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. On their way to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s office at Vidhana Soudha, cheering fans assembled on both sides of the road to greet the triumphant squad.

Historic win, victory parade

RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in the IPL final at Ahmedabad on Tuesday (June 3) to clinch their maiden title in 18 years.

It marked another major achievement for the team’s talisman Virat Kohli, who has played for the franchise since the league’s inception.

Following the meeting with the chief minister, the RCB players headed to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for a fan engagement programme.

The much-anticipated open-top bus parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium began at 5 pm, after the chief minister granted special permission for it.
