Aakash Chopra does not favor Delhi Capitals giving Faf du Plessis vice-captaincy in the Indian Premier League. He urged the franchise to consider the former South African batter’s future before the next tournament season.
DC finished fifth in the standings with 15 points from 14 games in IPL 2025. While Axar Patel was the team’s captain for most of the cash-rich league, Du Plessis led the team in the last few games of the season when the all-rounder was injured.
“They bought Jake Fraser-McGurk for INR 9 crore. He didn’t do anything with the bat, so he should be released. There is a need to think about Faf du Plessis as well,” Aakash Chopra said.
“He cost INR 2 crore but is not getting younger and can’t get the vice-captaincy. When you make him a deputy, it becomes difficult to drop him,” he added.
Aakash mentioned that the Capitals should keep Faf for the next edition but should consider giving vice-captaincy to someone else.
“You wanted to drop him from the Playing XI, but Axar Patel got injured, and you played Faf. You can retain him because his price was low, but remove him as a vice-captain. He can remain a part of the leadership group.”
Faf scored 202 runs in nine games at a strike rate of 123.92.
Aakash Chopra thinks Mukesh Kumar, the Indian pacer, should also be released. He was bought for INR 8 crore.
“Mukesh Kumar should be released as he has been very expensive. That’s a concerning point for the franchise,” he said.
If they release Mukesh and Fraser-McGurk, DC would have INR 17 crore in their purse.
