Rohit Sharma, Pat Cummins’ Calls Rejected, India Given Setback; ICC Make Big WTC Final Decision: Report
Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins' calls for the World Test Championship (WTC) final to be shifted out of England seem to have fallen on deaf ears as the summit clash of the mega event is set to stay in England for the coming years.
As per a report by the Telegraph.co.uk, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has told the England Cricket Board (ECB) of their intention to host the summit clash in England for the next three editions
This development comes despite reports in recent days suggesting that India has expressed their intention to host the summit clash. The report revealed that there have been discussions of rotating the final, but the decision to give England the final of the 2027, 2029, and 2031 finals will be rubber-stamped at the ICC's annual conference in Singapore next month.
The published information stated that guaranteed ticket sales in England are a key reason behind the decision.
So far, all three finals of the WTC have taken place in England, with Southampton hosting it in 2021 and the Oval in 2023 before the 2025 final at Lord's.
No decision has yet been taken on where the 2027 final will take place, with Lord's a favourite. Planning is expected to start shortly.
Ahead of the match, Australian captain Pat Cummins had called for the match to be played in the country that won the previous edition.
"It'd be nice, maybe the previous winner hosts that for the next time, or something like that. But as an alternative, I think having it at Lord's every cycle is also a pretty good place," said Cummins in the pre-match press conference.
Before the 2023 final between India and Australia, ex-Indian Test team skipper Rohit Sharma had called for the final to be played outside England and questioned the rationale behind the scheduling.
"Why after the IPL final? Why cannot it be March? June is not the only month we should play the final. It can be played any time of the year and anywhere in the world, not just in England, it can be played anywhere in the world" said Rohit in the post-match press conference of the 2023 edition."Why after the IPL final? Why cannot it be March? June is not the only month we should play the final. It can be played any time of the year and anywhere in the world, not just in England, it can be played anywhere in the world" said Rohit in the post-match press conference of the 2023 edition.
