Worcestershire Rapids’ Gareth Roderick said his side have to retain their positive approach to the game after falling to a third defeat in five games in the Vitality T20 Blast.

After his side batted first and found themselves 46-5, achieving an imposing score was always going to prove challenging for the hosts.

Coming in with his side in peril, Roderick partnered Ben Dwarshuis, as they put on 46 for the fifth wicket.

Roderick, eventually out for 35, said his time in the middle came to a premature end, and another few overs in the middle may well have changed the result.

“I was annoyed that I got out. I think, you know, a couple more strong shots, and if I could have stuck around for three or four overs might have ended up being another 20 or 25 runs.

“Unfortunately, we just didn’t have enough on the board to put any scoreboard pressure, unless we took a boatload of wickets like we did with our batting innings.

“Those experienced batters knew that, so they were a little more circumspect to make sure they didn’t lose early wickets. There was never really enough scoreboard pressure to put enough on them.”

Consistency has been hard to come by for the Rapids, as they won one and lost one of their opening two matches, repeating the same trend in their following two matches before tonight.

Defeat against Lancashire leaves Worcestershire sixth in the North group, with Sunday’s game against Leicestershire now taking on extra importance in the Rapids’ quest to reach the quarter-finals.

Roderick, says the team will continue their positive approach and back each other, as they search for more consistency in the later stages of the competition.

“I think the language is just positive. It’s kind of like, trust your teammates to have a plan and execute their plan, be aggressive. That’s the nature of T20 around the world now.

“We set that platform in the power play, we’ve been doing that, I think it’s just about being more consistent and hopefully set more of a platform.”
