Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has expressed his belief that Mohammed Siraj should aim to become India’s premier bowler in the upcoming Test series against England. The much-awaited five-match Test series between India and England is set to start on June 20. With uncertainty surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s full participation, Siraj will be expected to lead the seam attack for India.
Despite a challenging run in the past two Test series, where India faced defeats to New Zealand and Australia, Bharat Arun has shown confidence in Siraj’s ability to bounce back. Arun praised Siraj’s wealth of experience and highlighted how he could translate his impressive IPL performances into success in Test cricket.
Since September 2024, Siraj has taken 26 wickets in nine Test matches at an average of 33.73 and an economy rate of 3.82. He took 20 wickets during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, but his performance often lacked the support Bumrah required. Siraj must step up his performance in the upcoming England series as India embark on a fresh chapter in Test cricket under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Siraj. He has the experience needed for this role. I’ve witnessed him deliver some outstanding spells, like the one in the Lord’s Test during our last victory. Now, it’s time for Siraj to step up and declare, ‘I’m ready to be the lead bowler for my country’. He has all the skills required. It’s about the mindset he brings to the table, which will be crucial. Siraj is a smart player and one who can be a captain’s dream, always giving his best. While aggression is important, managing it effectively will be key. He’s had a solid IPL and appears to be in good rhythm,” Arun shared with the Times of India.
