Emotional Umesh Yadav yearns for India comeback: I can’t select myself

Fast bowler Umesh Yadav has expressed his desire to make a comeback to the Indian team. Yadav's last appearance for the country came during the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2023, where India lost to Australia by 209 runs at the Oval.

During the match, Yadav registered figures of 2/131 in 40 overs, across two innings and failed to take crucial breakthroughs for the team at the right time.

As a result, Recently, the speedster opened up on his comeback desire and revealed that he will try his level best to storm back into the squad by performing well in domestic cricket.

"Efforts to make a comeback are complete.

I cannot select myself. I will have to play some matches, get fit. To come back, I will have to play competitive cricket. My effort is to get fit and come back in the team," Yadav told Sports Tak.

Furthermore, the Nagpur-born bowler recalled his journey to the international level and said that he never thought that he'd end up playing for India one day.

"When I started playing cricket, I never thought that I will play this, I will play that, I would play for India. I am a natural fast bowler. I have been bowling fast since childhood. I never went to any academy or nets.

That is why I never thought that I would play for India. I kept on playing. Someone told me to play this, someone told me to play that. While playing, the son of a coal miner is sitting here playing for India. I think some things that are meant to happen, happen. I always say that fast bowlers are natural; you cannot make them fast bowlers" added Umesh.

Yadav has played 57 Test matches for India and scalped 170 wickets at an average of 30.95 with three five-wicket hauls to his name. Apart from that, he has also played 75 ODIs and nine T20Is,

Yadav last featured in the Ranji Trophy in 2024-25, where he could only pick one wicket from one match.

He also went unsold in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) mega auction after playing for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the previous season.
