Legendary English batter Joe Root is entering the much-anticipated five-match Test series against India with a renewed sense of excitement, calling it a thrilling stretch in a career he says is “the most fun” he's ever had.

Speaking ahead of the first Test at Headingley, Root expressed no reservation about the demanding months ahead, with India’s tour soon followed by the Ashes in Australia. “You can only be excited. These are the series you play for. The opportunities in front of us are epic,” he told Sky Sports.

Since relinquishing captaincy in 2022, Root has averaged a remarkable 56.67 across 36 Tests, accumulating over 3,100 runs. Reflecting on this change, he remarked, “It has become the most fun time of my career. Playing the way we play, the environment that has been created... so much fun has come with it.”

Root made no secret of his admiration for India’s comprehensive setup. “You look at India’s progression as a team across all formats and they have all bases covered – great seam attack, talented batters and a very strong spin attack,” he observed.

He also noted the temptation to compare this series with the upcoming Ashes but emphasized staying focused: “you have a job to do against a brilliant team”

While India are aiming for their first Test series win in England since 2007, Root is confident that home advantage could be decisive. “Our record at home makes for a fantastic series. We will go into it with confidence but also with a huge amount of respect for what they will bring,” he asserted.

History Awaits Joe Root

While all the focus is on the WTC 2025-27 cycle, one must keep a note that Joe Root sits less than 400 runs shy off a historic milestone.

The Englishman is the 5th-highest run-scorer in the history of Test Cricket, but only needs 373 runs to surpass the likes of Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, and ultimately, Ricky Ponting, who currently occuipes the 2nd spot with 13,378 runs.
