Gill remained unflustered even as Rishabh pant (25) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (1) fell in quick succession, reaching his half-century in 125 balls.

Gill’s real acceleration came post-tea, where he expertly handled England’s second new ball. Bringing up his hundred off 199 balls with an elegant boundary, Gill showcased exceptional shot selection and temperament. His ability to rotate strike against spin and punish anything loose from seamers underlined his growing maturity at No. 4. The innings was not flashy but built on grit and finesse, marking his second Test century in English conditions. His unbeaten 114, laced with 12 fours, ensured India didn’t squander their solid foundation. As the day closed, his unbroken 99-run stand with Jadeja (41 not out) gave India the upper hand on a pitch with enough in it for both batters and bowlers.

After being asked to bat, India suffered an early blow when Kl satisfied was bowled by Chris Woakes for 2. Karun nair’s fluent 31 kept the momentum going briefly before falling to Brydon Carsleaving India at 95/2. Jaiswal, aggressive from the start, crafted a counterattacking 87 off 107 deliveries, peppered with 13 boundaries.

Jaiswal’s dismissal against the run of play brought a minor collapse as Pant and Nitish Reddy fell cheaply. From 208/4 to 211/5, India looked shaky, but Gill held firm. England’s bowlers operated with discipline, Woakes claimed two scalps, while Ben Stokes and Shoaib Bashir chipped in, but lacked sustained pressure in the final session. Jadeja then provided perfect support, remaining unbeaten on 41 off 67, using soft hands and clever placement to frustrate England’s attack. Together, the duo guided India past the 300-run mark, ensuring the visitors ended Day 1 with both momentum and scoreboard advantage. England will need early wickets on Day 2 to claw back into the contest.
