Kolkata Knight Riders are among the top performing franchises in the Indian Premier League 2024. They are second in the points table after winning five matches. KKR have responded positively to Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as mentor of the two-time champions.
Sumi Narine, Phil Salt, Andre Russell and Harshit Rana are contributing in the 17th season. Kolkata was struggling in the last seasons before. Gambhir decided to return to his favourite team.
Shubman Gill, who is leading Gujarat Titans, was with the Knight Riders. However, he was not retained before the mega auction in 2022.
Gujarat, who were making its debut, signed Gill before the auction process. The young batter has grown in stature since then. He accumulated more than 800 runs in the previous season and won the Orange Cap.
The Titans made it to the final for the second consecutive time but lost to Chennai Super Kings. Former India player Vinay Kumar said that KKR made a blunder by not retaining the future star of the Indian cricket.
“They made a big mistake by not retaining Shubman Gill. He has become a big star in the last three years. The management and the owners should have kept Gill in the team. You need match-winners like him to win titles,” he said on Star Sports.
