Ahead of the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford, the visitors’ injury concerns and potential team combination have become the centre of attention. A key topic of discussion is Rishabh Pant’s fitness and whether he will return to full-time wicketkeeping duties. Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar addressed Pant’s availability and India’s bowling strategy for the crucial match.

Pant, who sustained an injury to his left index finger during the Lord’s Test, was unable to fulfil a large part of his wicketkeeping responsibilities in that match. However, he batted in both innings and trained in preparation for the fourth Test. On Tuesday, captain Shubman Gill confirmed that Pant has regained full fitness and will take the gloves at Old Trafford. Bangar highlighted Pant’s return behind the stumps as a positive development, noting how it strengthens India’s team structure.

“Having Pant available as a wicketkeeper is a very positive sign as it ensures the team structure remains intact. If he experiences any discomfort, KL Rahul can step in as a reliable backup with the gloves. Overall, Pant behind the stumps brings much-needed stability to India’s playing XI. He is mentally resilient and thrives on big occasions, especially when faced with challenges, which is when he truly excels, ” he said exclusively on ‘Follow The Blues’.

“I’ve observed that many players perform even better when dealing with a niggle, as it sharpens their focus. Wicketkeeping is a demanding role that keeps you involved in the game at all times. If Rishabh is ready to take on this responsibility, it shows he’s recovered well, because the Indian team wouldn’t risk playing someone unfit,” he added

Bangar also pointed out that if needed, KL Rahul could serve as a backup option. Given Dhruv Jurel’s mistakes behind the stumps at Lord’s, India will be hoping that Pant can keep wickets full-time as they aim to level the series.
