Overview:
Ashwin also highlighted Bumrah’s back issues and his long absence from cricket.
R Ashwin was surprised by India’s decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah from the fifth and final Test against England. However, Ashwin also mentioned that Bumrah is an asset and needs to be handled with care. The Board of Control for Cricket in India had made it clear before the start of the tour that the pacer would be a part of three out of five Tests.
“I am surprised because if this were the Indian team of the past, the team management would have persuaded him to be a part of the final Test. I know the current team management might have looked at the prospect of keeping Bumrah in the Playing XI at The Oval, but from the bowler’s perspective, it was the right call. It was already decided that he would be competing in three Tests, and the decision-makers stuck to it,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin also highlighted Bumrah’s back issues and his long absence from cricket. “His back problem is not a normal one. Bumrah has been out of action for almost two years. He is a valuable asset, and the decision is the right one. I am happy that Bumrah is taking care of his body as it would help him in future,” he added.
Ashwin also explained the reason behind Kuldeep Yadav’s non-selection.
“There is no need to put pressure on Kuldeep Yadav as he is not going to be your strike bowler. Fast bowlers will take wickets on these wickets.”
