India’s spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been officially released from the India squad for the fifth and final test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at The Oval.

The BCCI has confirmed the development on the morning of day 02, citing workload management as the reason behind the move.

“Mr Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India’s squad for the fifth Test of the series against England. The fifth and final Test of the series is underway at Kennington Oval, London,” said BCCI in the statement.

Jasprit Bumrah has been expected to play only three of the five tests on this tour. He featured in the first, third and fourth matches where he picked 14 wickets, including five wicket haul at Lord’s and Headingley.

He picked 5/74 and earned a place on the Honours Board. India’s only win in the series came in the second test at Edgbaston, when Bumrah was rested. Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna led the attack in that match as India secured a 336-run victory under Shubman Gill.

With discussions within and outside the camp about playing Jasprit Bumrah in the final Test given the series was still alive but the team management stuck to their original play.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir had made it clear in the series. “There will be no compromise on workload.”

India Made Four Changes for the Oval Test. Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Shardul Thakur and Anshul Kamboj Were Left Out With Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep and Karun Nair replacing Them.

England opted to bowl first after winning the toss. India went on to score 206 runs for 6 with Karun Nair and Washington Sundar unbeaten.

In the fourth test, Bumrah’s pace saw a dip to 130-155 kmph range, but he still deliveried tight spells and held one end up as runs flowed from the other.

Siraj, Thakur and Kamboj were expensive, putting further pressure on the attack.

Jasprit Bumrah overtook Wasim Akram to become the leading wicket-taker among Asian bowlers in SENA Countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia).

England currently lead the series 2-1 and India must win the final to draw the series. A draw or defeat in this match would hand the series to England, who are looking to seal their first home test series win against India since 2018.
